RAF Fylingdales
North Yorkshire, UK
RAF Fylingdales is home to an extraordinarily advanced solid state phased array radar (SSPAR) system, which forms part of the UK and US early warning and missile tracking capability. The Ministry of Defence are concerned about the potential consequences of vibration from blasting at a new mine situated approximately 8km away on the operation of the SSPAR, which has an estimated value approaching £1bn and plays a vital security role.
Sine Environmental provides technical advice to the MoD in relation to this concern, and have developed bespoke vibration limits for the SSPAR based on vibration survey data and vibration criterion curves. Sine Environmental have also represented the MoD in discussions with the mine operators (Sirius Minerals) and helping them develop their blast vibration management plan so that blasting may be undertaken in a way that poses an acceptable risk to this MoD facility.
